The monument is an allegory alluding to the history of the County of Benavente founded in 1398 in the person of the Portuguese knight Jo\u00e2o Alfonso Pimentel and the motto of his lineage: <em>M\u00e1s Vale Volando<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n<p>It represents the head of a medieval warrior who with large wings seems to want to take flight. The wings symbolize those of the vulture that tops one of the coats of arms of the Pimentel family. In its pedestal some shells or scallops and some stripes allude to the heraldic emblem or coat of arms of this noble family. It comes to mean that before mediocre security of the earthly things it is always preferable to raise the flight in search of a feat, to fight to surpass itself in front of the earthly mediocrity, to fight for a goal that ennobles.
